       The Fifth China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, jointly hosted by Ministry of EducationMOE, P. R. China, and the People's Government of Guizhou Province, successfully opened on 17th September, 2014 in Guiyang.

       With the theme of “Open, Innovation, Practical, Cooperative”, the Cooperation Week aims to strengthen the friendship, mutual understanding and collaboration between China and ASEAN countries. Eight events will be held during this period including "China - ASEAN Food Culture Festival" and ASEAN-China University Presidents Symposium.

       Since 2008, the Cooperation Week has been held in Guizhou Province for four consecutive years, during which China and ASEAN built a comprehensive and cooperative partnership in the field of Education. Since 2010, under the Double 100,000 Students Plan, the number of Chinese students studying in ASEAN Countries had exceeded 100,000, and ASEAN ones in China, more than 50,000. Moreover, universities in Guizhou Province have been engaged in fruitful cooperation and exchanges with their ASEAN counterparts.

    Among the officials present at the opening ceremony were Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, former Deputy Minister of Education and President of China Education Association for International Exchange; Ms. Zhang Xiuqin, Director of Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges; Ms. Yang Jian, Deputy Director-Generals of Department of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China; Mr. Ma Mingqiang, Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Center; Dr. Witaya Jeradechakul, Director of SEAMEO Secretariat; Mr. Liu Xiaokai, Member of the Standing Committee of Guizhou Province and Director of the United Front Work of Guizhou Province; Mr. Gu Jiu, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of Guizhou Provincial People's Congress; Mr. Xie Qingsheng, Vice Governor of Guizhou Province; and Mr. Ban Chengnong, Vice Chairman of the Committee of Guizhou Provincial People’s Political Consultative Conference.

       Other participants included not only leaders from Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), China Scholarship Council, China Education Association for International Exchange, Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange,and China National Commission for UNESCO; but also envoys of some ASEAN countries, representatives from ASEAN Secretariat, education officials, university presidents, experts, scholars and students’ representatives from China and ASEAN.

      The opening ceremony received a congratulatory letter from Mr. Zhao Kezhi, Party Secretary of Guizhou Province and Governor of Guizhou Province. Mr. Zhao, on behalf the Provincial Committee and Provincial Government, extended his warm congratulations to the Cooperation Week, his sincere welcome to all guests, and his gratitude to the Ministry of EducationMOE, P.R.China and friends both at home and abroad for their concerns and supports.

      He also noted that China had worked closely with ASEAN in fields of language teaching, human resources training, and youth exchanges, which laid a solid foundation for bilateral relations in education and other areas. He said both sides should make joint efforts to strengthen exchanges so as to make the full use of our talents.

      Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, President of China Education Association for International Exchange, addressed the opening ceremony. He said that the past four Cooperation Weeks had become a special brand and an important platform for China’s cooperation with ASEAN. He hoped that two sides should strengthen regional cooperation, adhere to opening-up and innovation and promote practical cooperation through implementing relative initiatives.

      Mr. Xie Qingsheng, Vice Governor of Guizhou Province, made a keynote speech at the opening ceremony. He pointed out that the Fifth Cooperation Week was characterized by diverse forms, rich contents, broad involvement, effectiveness and sustainability. In the meantime, Guizhou Province would spare no efforts to create favorable conditions for bilateral cooperation, integrate resources and fulfill all agreements. We would like to promote exchanges and cooperation in cultural and educational exchanges as well as in scientific research and development and economy and trade.

      Other speakers included Ms. Yang Jian, Mr. Ma Mingqiang, Dr Witaya Jeradechakul and representatives from both ASEAN students and Chinese students.

       During the opening Ceremony, Ms. Zhang Xiuqin and Ms. Yang Jian granted accreditation to Guizhou Electrical Polytechnic Institute of China-ASEAN Education Training Center. Besides, China-ASEAN Education Training Center signed cooperative agreements with Beijing Tai’ao Sports & Culture Development Co., LTD., which donated 10 million yuan to the Center. Memorandums of Understanding on promotion of the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week was signed between China-ASEAN Education Training Center and the Education Department of Guizhou Province.

       Different from previous ones, in the Fifth Cooperation Week, there was, for the first time, China-ASEAN Panel on Medical Education, International Business Talents Training Seminar for China-ASEAN Free Trade Zone, Tourism-Related Talents Cultivation Panel, Vocational Education Panel, and Ethnic Cultural Industry Development Symposium. governmental officials, university presidents, educational experts and scholars from both sides would participate in and share experiences and achievements.
